Rami Danon 1943 – 2019 Playwright, director and actor

Rami Danon was born in Morocco and immigrated to Israel with his family at the age of six. During the 1960s he studied drama and theatre at Nola Chilton’s studio. In 1968 he was one of the founders of the Khan Theatre in Jerusalem. In the early 1970s he studied in the Department of Theatre Arts at Tel Aviv University, and later joined the Haifa Theatre.

Since 1986, Danon has focused on playwriting and directing, writing and directing dozens of plays — both by Israeli playwrights and translated works.

Between 1992 and 1995, he was a member of the artistic management team of the Acco Festival of Alternative Israeli Theatre. In 2003, he founded the community theatre in the city of Sderot.

  • “Trumpet in the Wadi” – based on the novel by Sami Michael. Adapted and directed by Rami Danon. 1990.

  • “To Dance Andersen” – a dance play written and directed by Rami Danon. The “Kol Ve’D’mama” Dance Company. 1993.

  • “Sheindele” – a play (co-written with Amnon Levy) and directed by Rami Danon. The Cameri Theatre. September 1993. The play was the first to bring the lives of the ultra-Orthodox world to a secular audience. It ran for ten years and received widespread acclaim. During its tour in Buenos Aires, Argentina, it was highly praised, and it won the Judges’ Prize for Best Play at the Manchester Festival, England. In Heilbronn, Germany, it was also produced and received enthusiastic reviews.

  • “Tikkun Chatzot” – a play (co-written with Amnon Levy) and directed by Rami Danon. The Cameri Theatre. 1996. The production was performed nearly 300 times.

  • “Little Demon” – based on the book by Dudu Dotan. Adapted and directed by Rami Danon. Habima Theatre. 1998. The production ran for about four years.

  • “The Finger of God” – based on the work of Dan Benaya Seri. Adapted and directed by Rami Danon. Be’er Sheva Theatre. 2000.

  • “Kapparot” – based on Sholem Aleichem. Adapted and directed by Rami Danon. November 2001.

  • “Father’s Braid” – written (in collaboration with Amnon Levy) and directed by Rami Danon. The Cameri Theatre. 2003. The production was highly successful with audiences and critics and is approaching 400 performances.

  • “The Good Son” – written (in collaboration with Yossi Melman) and directed by Rami Danon. The Cameri Theatre. Premiered in February 2006.
