Shachar (Shar) Shamai Librettist, lyricist, composer and director

An Israel-born, London-based librettist, lyricist, composer, director, and vocal coach. He earned an MA in Classical Singing from the Jerusalem Academy of Music & Dance and later pursued an MA in Musical Theatre at Guildford School of Acting (GSA). Since graduating from GSA, Shar has been teaching singing and vocal techniques at various musical theatre academies, including PPA, ICMT, Urdang Academy, and LSC. He has also been invited to teach and lecture in Israel, the Netherlands, and Italy. He works internationally as a director and vocal coach.

Shar is currently participating in the prestigious BML (Book, Music, Lyrics) course in London, designed to nurture emerging talent in musical theatre writing.

As a librettist and lyricist, Shar is involved in two exciting new musical theatre projects in Israel. The first, titled SONIA, premiered in December 2023 at Haifa Theatre, one of Israel’s largest theatres. The second, EXPOSED, is currently in development. Shar recently travelled to Israel to direct a workshop for EXPOSED and served as a vocal coach for the Israeli production of Waitress at The Cameri Theatre of Tel Aviv.

Shar is also the founder and artistic director of The JEWish CABARET, through which he gained  experience in writing, composing, and directing various shows. He has also hosted events like poetry evenings, comedy cabarets, and migrant-led musical theatre showcases. The group’s original musical, Café Named Desire, was well-received in London and went on tour in Israel. Currently, The JEWish CABARET is developing a new musical called STAGES, focusing on the experiences of immigrants in London’s performing arts industry.

During the pandemic, Shar produced and directed a music video, You’ve Got a Friend, featuring 22 different languages as a statement against racism and a fundraiser for racial equality initiatives. He also composed an original song called Plagues, addressing the rise of racism during the pandemic and encouraging reflection and action.

In addition to his work in theatre and music, Shar is a published poet in Hebrew. His poems inspired the short film Poetry in Motion – Dew Drops, which was commissioned to premiere at the Worcester Loud & Queer Festival in 2023.
