The Orchard /
Yosef Bar-Yosef
Text in: he English |
Ida, a Russian ballet teacher, steps into the beautiful orchard of Menashe Sirkman, an embittered widower. The orchard – full of fragrances and beauty – reminds her of romantic dreams she had long forgotten after her immigration to Israel. The delicate, unexpected love story between Ida and Menashe arouses the jealousy of his wicked brother and sister, whose heart’s desire is to be the orchard’s owners. While the Russian woman sees the orchard as a symbol of beauty, the brothers, originally Israelis from a moshava rural community – refer to it as property. The Orchard can be seen as Bar-Yosef’s version of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. |
