The entire play takes place over one night in the bedroom of Zaza, the wife of the general Nino. Zaza is torn between her longing for her adopted son Chvchavadze and her complex loyalty to her husband, against the backdrop of a declining empire. Secondary characters—emperor, empress, soldiers, servants, and a maid—amplify the charged drama. Power relations, love, and betrayal are examined with cruelty and black humor as the characters confront fears, desires, and self-destruction, in Hanoch Levin’s distinctive style. |
