The Fifth Wall — Issue No. 17

How do you learn to write plays? There is still no institution in Israel whose primary purpose is to serve as a school for playwriting. However, dramatic writing can be studied as a course at some institutions that teach theatre, communications, or film. There are also private courses, writing workshops, and development labs where students can learn the foundations of writing for the stage.
Many of the playwrights working in Israel today are self-taught. They have learned through reading, watching performances, working in the field, and above all through trial and error. There are many ways to learn playwriting, and there is a great deal to learn. In this issue, we host seven experienced and successful playwrights, from whom there is much to learn. They answer questions, share tips, cautions, and recommendations for emerging and experienced writers, and discuss learning to write for the theatre through their experience as playwrights, dramaturgs, students, and teachers.
Playwright and teacher Roy Malih Reshef contributes an article on motivation to write, and on the difference between writing for ourselves and writing for others.
As usual, further on you will also find special offers and discounts for newsletter readers, news, and open calls for theatre-makers.
