Kigler: His Life and Death is a delightful and successful play created by playwright and director Oded Liphshitz. It is a drama filled with self-awareness about a dreary, self-absorbed man who embarks on a journey of spiritual self-discovery through an encounter with his dying brother in America. In the hands of the excellent actors – David Kigler, Yossi Toledo, Albert Cohen, Dina Blay-Shor, and Rachel Dobson – the witty and sophisticated text turns into a surprising and ironic tragicomic journey. […] All in all, this is a clever and provoking play that reveals a young talented writer with an original and fresh writing style – different in a good way.

[Shai Bar-Yaakov, Yedioth Ahronoth]

For a few years now Oded Liphshitz has been one of the big hopes of Israeli theatre: a prolific playwright with a distinctive poetic style whose work has won prizes at the Beit Lessin Open Stage Festival, the Tzavta Tzav Kria Festival, and the Heidelberg Festival in Germany. He has directed some of his plays, and even composed the music for them.

[Marat Parkhomovsky, Time Out, 2011]

You have perhaps already come across his name. About a year ago he presented The Girl Who is Actually a Wheelbarrow at the Department of Theatre Arts at Tel Aviv University, a play that instantly attracted extraordinary attention from audiences and critics alike. His poetic writing was clearly evident, and the fact that the play was directed by Edna Shavit – the first to direct Hanoch Levin’s plays – immediately put the name of the genius on a par with the young playwright.

Quotes

“Kigler: You can get your expectations up, but I’m forewarning what happens with Kigler who appears in the first act. In the fifth act, he doesn’t change.”

“Virgil: There’s no theatrical scenery. But that’s part of the concept. There’s no need for it either, the text speaks for itself.”

“When I saw you the light was rekindled in me. Like a flame that the wind blew out long ago. That was lost like a chime that slipped away in the mountains back then when I forgot what love is.”

“Kigler: When I stand before the gates to hell this light is supposed to light up, but it doesn’t. Did they feel it?”

“I also hurt a little. Like your brother. But emotionally. It’s a pain that intensifies on the left side, before I fall asleep. And it diminishes. When you come closer.”

“I can’t hold your hand. There are other patients here, Kigler, who need their hand held. You mustn’t forget that this is America.”

“It’s time to go back to normal, this digging around inside yourself isn’t healthy anymore. Don’t forget there’s a mother in the picture as well. It’s important for her that you succeed, but within reason.”

“Today we’ll cry and laugh and remember the past, and we’ll reminisce about experiences, because when else do we get a chance to experience something of this magnitude, the death of a brother.”

“I’ve come to take you to the inferno, to see hell, and then heaven, and in the end paradise. Shop. And home. It’s a journey everybody has to make, especially you. Because, look, I see you’ve taken a wrong turn.”

“And it turns out that life listened to conscience and decided to give Kigler a one last chance. A moment before he remains himself absolutely and finally.”
